Former Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle will return home today almost six weeks after a serious accident left him hospitalised.

This morning his wife Gemma tweeted: “Nearly 6 weeks on... Today I’m collecting Mr C to come home full time! Thanks once again for your amazing support and love. #luckytobehere.”

Clarke (35) was hit by a lorry on the A64 in Bishopthorpe, North Yorkshire, on December 22nd, and is currently recovering in hospital in Leeds.

Once dubbed “Britain’s Brainiest Footballer” after winning television quiz show “Countdown”, the former chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association is a representative for mental health charities, made 149 appearances for the Clarets between 2007 and 2012.
