Former Burnley winger George Boyd opens up on the 'sickening' blow which denied Posh a promotion push

Peterborough United were sixth when the season was brought to a halt amid the pandemic, just three points off second place Rotherham United.

Darren Ferguson’s side were the in-form team in England’s third tier having won seven of their last nine fixtures as they moved into the top six.

However, a vote to end the term on a points-per-game basis saw Posh usurped in the play-off places by Wycombe Wanderers.

“It was sickening,” said Boyd. “It seems so unfair with the form that we were in and with the fixtures we had left.

“We were only three points from second and we had five games left at home.

“We had the best home form in the league and seven of our last nine games were against sides in the bottom half.

“We were really confident that we were going to get automatic promotion, let alone the play-offs.

“It’s so unfair and the way it’s been decided is terrible.

“There were so many teams in and around it so Rotherham must feel like they’ve won the lottery because their form had dipped and they had some tough fixtures.

“They’d have been buzzing when it was cancelled.”

Boyd is confident that the club can give it another good go next season, despite the disappointment, as they look to get back into the Championship.

But he fears that there’ll be plenty of interest in leading scorer Ivan Toney, who bagged 26 goals in all competitions.

He said: “The chairman [Darragh MacAnthony] and the club is really ambitious; though it will be tough to keep hold of Ivan [Toney] because he’s had an amazing season.

“It will be difficult to keep hold of him, but you just never know with the current financial situation in football at the minute.

“Will somebody be willing to come in and pay the big money for him?”

Boyd made 17 starts and five appearances from the bench for Posh this term.
