Fletcher on hand to rescue Clarets a point

BURNLEY Reserves were in action against Sunderland at Accrington Stanley on Monday and they drew 2-2 with Wigan at the Crown Ground.

Jay Rodriguez should have been awarded an early penalty after being brought down, but the referee wasn’t convinced. However, the Clarets went ahead when Frédéric Nimani fed Rodriguez, who shifted the ball on for Adam Kay to finish first time.

Rodriguez then forced a fine save from Lee Nicholls, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

Wigan netted twice through Callum Morris to go ahead in the second half, but two minutes from time, substitute Wes Fletcher latched onto a pass from Alex MacDonald and produced a clinical finish.

Kevin McDonald played 90 minutes in his first action since being replaced at half-time in the first team’s 6-1 defeat at home to Manchester City, and his subsequent punishment for leaving the ground.

Burnley: Weaver; Anderson (Williams 56), Yadolahi, Long, Hoskin (King 67); Kay, K. McDonald, Harvey, MacDonald; Rodriguez, Nimani (W. Fletcher 61).

Subs not used: D. McDonald, Knowles.
