The 24-year-old netted from the spot in a 2-0 triumph against Fleetwood Town at Highbury - in the presence of penalty taking expert Graham Alexander.

The Scot, who scored 21 penalties from 22 attempts in his time at Turf Moor, missing against David James in a stalemate against Bristol City, watched from the sidelines as Sordell sent Chris Maxwell the wrong way from 12 yards out in the 26th minute.

It was a productive outing for the Clarets, who opened the scoring just shy of the quarter-of-an-hour mark.

After Jimmy Ryan’s driven effort found the gloves of Tom Heaton and Antoni Sarcevic’s right-footed strike had fizzed past the upright via a deflection off Michael Keane, the Clarets broke the deadlock through Stephen Ward.

The marauding full back started and finished the move when feeding Michael Kightly infield, continuing his run, latching on to Sordell’s clever assist and slotting in to the net at the second time of asking after his initial effort was saved by Maxwell.

Sordell went close after manufacturing space outside the box but, after shifting the ball on to his right foot, his attempt flicked off the boot of Ryan and flashed past the post.

Matty Taylor’s fierce effort from the angle of the penalty area was then beaten away by Maxwell, but there was nothing the goalkeeper could do moments later.

Former Claret Stephen Jordan was the offender when tripping Sordell inside the box, leaving referee David Coote with no other option but to point to the spot.

Sordell picked himself up, dusted himself off, and guided the ball in to the right hand side of the net with assurance. It was almost as if he’d taken guidance from Alexander, who scored 77 penalties throughout his career, with a 90 per cent success rate.

The hosts almost pulled a goal back when Burnley’s rearguard failed to react to Tyler Forbes’s hopeful ball over the top, but Sarcevic fired an effort across the face of goal from an uncompromising angle after rounding Heaton.

And in the final action of the half, Taylor threw himself in the way of Jamie Proctor’s shot from close range.

The second half was much like the first; the away side controlled the pattern of the fixture and dictated the tempo.

Lukas Jutkiewicz, looking to add to his three goals to date having replaced Sordell, failed to test Maxwell with a tame attempt engineered by Sam Vokes’s flick on.

Kightly tested Maxwell with a low, angled drive after forcing Forbes on to the back foot before Jutkiewicz pulled a shot wide after turning Conor McLaughlin.

In front of 3,704 fans housed inside the stadium, 1,281 of those from Burnley, highly rated right back Cameron Dummigan went close to adding a third with an exquisite, rasping effort that whistled past the upright. For a second, the top corner seemed its only destination.
