Edgar strikes as Canada ease to World Cup victory

CLARETS defender David Edgar netted his first international goal on Friday as Canada beat Cuba 3-0 in Toronto.

Edgar picked up his 14th cap for the Canucks at BMO Field, and produced a tidy volley to make it 3-0 in a game Canada had to win to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

They are now level on points with group leaders Panama, needing to avoid defeat to Honduras in their last group game in San Pedro Sula today to progress to the next stage of qualifying, where their likely opponents will be Panama, Guatemala, USA, Mexico and Costa Rica or El Salvador.

That final stage of qualifying takes place next year between February and October.

Winger Dane Richards, who will become a Burnley player on January 1st, came on as a substitute for Jamaica just before half-time in their win over Guatemala, which took them top of their qualifying group,

Jamaica take on Antigua and Barbuda today, needing a hefty margin of victory to edge out the losers of USA v Guatemala.

Striker Sam Vokes was an unused substitute as two late Gareth Bale goals helped Wales earn their first points in a 2-1 win over Scotland at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Former Clarets Steven Fletcher - who claimed an assist and also had a goal incorrectly ruled out on his return to the international fold - and Danny Fox both started for Scotland.

First year professional Luke Conlan had the misfortune of being sent off for Northern Ireland Under 19s as they lost 2-0 to Greece.
