Dyche wants wins in promotion chase

In the 2001/02 campaign, which saw Norwich City usurp the Clarets for a top six finish by a solitary goal, Dyche made 39 appearances for the Lions as Mark McGhee’s side finished fourth, setting up a two-legged play-off semi-final tie with Birmingham City.

However, Dyche, who played in the 2-0 loss and the 0-0 stalemate against the Clarets that term in the old Division One, watched from the bench as the Blues secured a 2-1 aggregate triumph to face the Canaries at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, eventually securing a route to the Premier League on penalties.

“I just remember winning lots of games, because that’s what it’s all about,” Dyche said. “It’s as simple as that. The only way you can achieve anything is to win lots of games. That’s all we’re trying to do; win as many games as we can going in to the end of the season.”

In 13 meetings as player, coach and manager since Dyche was released from his contract at the Den in 2002, the Burnley boss has won 11 and drawn two against his former employers. On the other side of the coin, new Millwall boss Ian Holloway has not won at Turf Moor in 11 visits, losing eight of those fixtures.

However, Dyche refused to be swamped in the psychology of those statistics. “I’ve made it very clear that I’m not really concerned with that, whether it’s records about us or them,” he said. “We just prepare for the next game and we’ve done that well all season. We’re ready for every game that comes around and we’ll be ready again on Saturday. That’s my focus.

“They’ve got a new manager and there’s always a response to that situation, although they didn’t get a good result last weekend. There’s new players coming in and they’ll be looking to get something from the game.

“We’re always aware of the opposition, but it’s all about our group and what we look to do. We’ll certainly be looking to take the game to them.”

With the loan window opening up for Football League clubs tomorrow, Dyche revealed the club was continuing the search for recruits. However, the squad has been boosted by the return of Ross Wallace, who was on the bench at Loftus Road.

“We’ve been looking forever,” said Dyche. “I’ve mentioned it 457 times. It’s the alignment of the possibles, the probables, the maybes, against finance and ability. Nothing has changed, we’re still in the market and we’re still monitoring the situation.

“If there’s one that’s appropriate to help us then we’ll look to try and get it over the line. If not, then we’ll work hard with the group that we’ve got like we have done all season.”

He added: “It’s a freshness to have someone back that’s been out for a while. Ross will be looking to get involved with the group again and taking part in what we’re doing as a group.”
