Dyche looking at tactical options

But will they be able to continue to do so in the Premier League?

However, with several sides looking to pack midfield to try and wrest possession in the top flight, it remains to be seen whether Sean Dyche alters his tactics or not.

The likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have used a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 system, depending on your viewpoint, over recent seasons, as the formation has come back in vogue, but Dyche feels his players are capable of adapting in any circumstance: “If you look down the annals of history, tactics often come down to yardages on a football pitch.

“Recently I did a talk at the FA and they were asking me about tactics, and I aligned them with a team that Brian Clough had when I was a kid in 1987, and the way that team operated, you had full backs who wanted to go and join in, wide men who can come inside and can stretch the pitch, you’ve got a midfielder in Neil Webb who’d come deep, Steve Hodge running long, Nigel Clough coming off the front line into the number 10 spot, Peter Davenport running off the shoulder stretching the pitch.

“If you tell me that’s not modern, I don’t know what is. That’s what a lot of teams at any level of football, certainly the highest level of football, are a version of that.

“So although tactics are important, I think people can get too carried away with it.

“At the same time, you can’t be naive to it because there are some differences, but they’re mainly detailed differences and it often comes down to individual players.”

Dyche feels it is often more about players than systems, certainly at the highest level: “We do know that we’re going into a division with arguably some of the best individual players in the world.

“We obviously understand that within the tactics it’s a two-good thing.

“The tactics have to be right, but also dealing with the individuals within that make a big difference.”

Fads in formations come and go as coaches constantly search for answers, and Dyche added: “As a youngster I remember it was trendy to play 3-5-2, so more or less everyone in the country went through a spell of playing 3-5-2.

“If you look this season, 4-3-3 I believe saw the lowest scoring bottom two divisions in recent history, which says that 4-3-3 isn’t necessarily the answer to score goals.

“I’m not saying you have to play 4-4-2 - 4-4-1-1 can easily be told they’re 4-3-3.

“The most obvious real difference is a 3-5-2 because you’ve got a back three instead of a back four.

“But most other tactical formats are very similar, it’s just yardages. That’s what I believe anyway.”

• Dyche has been linked with the vacant head coach position at West Bromwich Albion.

As the Baggies’ directors look to replace Spaniard Pepe Mel, it is thought they have drawn up a shortlist of six names.

And reports in the Black County suggest Dyche could enter the frame - although it is thought West Brom would prefer a candidate who would not involve paying out compensation.
