“We were a bit light on numbers - we’ve got a few younger players and some out on loan - but he’s a good addition for the club for now and for the future.
“Firstly we’ll keep improving him because he’s young and he wants to learn. We play a different style so he’ll get used to that and adapt to it. The main thing is to keep developing him but I think he’ll bring a youthfulness and an open-mindedness.
“He’s that type of lad and he wants to do well, he wants to develop and he wants to learn. That’s what our environment and culture is about.”
Dyche added: “James is a player I have known for a couple of seasons and I’ve monitored his progress from Oldham, right the way through to now. We feel he’s an excellent signing for the club.”
