The Clarets lost Andre Gray just after the half hour with a hamstring injury, and, lacking his pace and ability to get in behind and down the side of defenders, Burnley were penned in for long periods by the Rams.

However, Tom Heaton was not overly stretched as Sean Dyche’s men gained a second clean sheet of the season.

Two early Derby penalty appeals fell on deaf ears, as Andreas Weimann went to ground rather easily, while Heaton won the ball from Chris Martin in a one on one.

Derby were on the front foot, pressing well, but, barring Tendayi Darikwa clearing off the line from a Cyrus Christie cross, Burnley kept the hosts at arm’s length in the first period.

After the break. Richard Keogh twice went close with headers from Johnny Russell corners, while Martin forced a sprawling save from Heaton, while Sam Vokes had three decent openings, stinging Scott Carson’s fingertips from 20 yards, looping an effort over the angle from a George Boyd cross, and scuffing a chance at the former England keeper.

It was a real show of resilience from the Clarets, who held out amid a late onslaught from Derby to register a point which may look a very good one come the business end of the season.
