Marney was handed his first start in over 10 months as Burnley were beaten 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

And the Clarets are now six games without a win.

The former Hull City man admits it’s time to put an end to that sequence: “We know the quality we’ve got in that changing room and that we can be up there, but we need to start winning games again.

“It’s been a really tough run, the lads are obviously really disappointed with the results, but we’re working as hard as we do, every day, and we know we can turn it around.

“But it’s okay saying it, we have to start winning games again.

“Saturday is a great opportunity and it’s definitely a winnable game, although we’ll show them respect.

“It’s another big game on Saturday and obviously we move on and do our homework on Charlton now, but we’re capable of beating them.”

Three of the next four games are at Turf Moor, and Marney feels that the crowd can play their part as well: Our home fans are great as the away fans are, and hopefully they can get behind us and we can start winning games to give them something to cheer about again.”

Marney played in an advanced midfield role at the Riverside, but whle he was delighted to return to the startine line-up, the result was not what he wanted: “It was great to be back because it’s been over 10 months now. I really enjoyed being back out there but it’s just disappointing we couldn’t get a result.

“I feel good, it was a tough one to come back for, but I’ve been working hard and hopefully now I can push on.”

The former England Under 21 man came in for Sam Vokes as Sean Dyche switched from a 4-4-1-1 to more of a 4-2-3-1, and he added: “We were playing a good team but it’s obviously disappointing to lose the game and it’s a soft goal from our point of view.

“We knew it was going to be tight because they’re well organised like ourselves and they only really had shots from distance.

“But we didn’t create much ourselves, it was just a soft goal that won it.

“The formation was new to us but we’ve got the players to play that and it’s good for the gaffer to have different options.

“I thought the first-half it worked how we thought it would but we were just hoping to create a few more chances.”
