And he feels he would be completely at home in that role in Euro 2020 this summer.

Pope has started three of England's last five internationals, and has yet to concede a goal in his first six caps - a Three Lions record.

Established number one Jordan Pickford is currently out with an injury sustained in Everton's 2-1 defeat to Burnley two weeks ago, in which Wood scored the opener, and Pope has been given a run of games by Gareth Southgate, with the 28-year-old set to again start against Poland at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Asked whether he has the character to step into a big tournament, speaking on talkSPORT, Wood said: "100%. Without a shadow of a doubt, he would be perfect for it, he'd stand up and deliver and show everybody what he is about.

"He is one of the best keepers I've worked with - shot stopping I think he's number one - he's unbelievable at taking pressure from crosses, corners, and every year he's been better playing out with his feet.

"Ultimately, if I'm putting a keeper in goal, I want him to stop goals, and he's been a credit for that for us for a number of years now.

"He's a minimum 12 clean sheets a season, and in my eyes he should be England number one.

"It's hard to knock Pickford out of that spot, but hopefully when his chance comes along, he takes it this week."
