Shackell, believed to be a target for outgoing Rams boss Steve McClaren earlier this summer, is reportedly the subject of a firm offer from new chief Paul Clement, who has arrived after leaving Real Madrid, where he was assistant to Carlo Ancelotti.

The Burnley captain has been a virtual ever-present for the Clarets in each of the last two seasons in the league, but is believed to have indicated his desire to return to the iPro Stadium.

Shackell joined the Clarets three summers ago for a fee believed to be in the region of £1m, after a lengthy chase by Eddie Howe, who immediately installed the centre back as captain.

Derby, however, hurt by two failed promotion charges, are keen to replace Jake Buxton and Richard Keogh with new signing Alex Pearce and Shackell, and will test Burnley’s resolve.
