The Tangerines revealed they have rejected bids from the Clarets and SPL champions Celtic for the 22-year-old, who they are believed to value at £2.5m.

Celtic are thought to have offered £1.5m for the former Scotland Under 21 international, with Burnley’s bid lower than that - and Clarets boss Sean Dyche will now move on to other targets.

A United spokesman said: “Neither of these bids is anywhere close to our valuation. Neither bid is nearly close enough to consider.”

Dyche revealed: “Different offers have been in for players. We like to do things privately, others don’t.

“But he’s more of a development player. We’ve had offers in for what you’d call more recognised players but they haven’t got over the line yet.”

Asked whether an improved offer was imminent, he added: “Highly unlikely. We just thought it was an offer for player who could progress with us.”

Burnley continue their efforts to strengthen ahead of the deadline at 11 p.m. on Monday.
