The Clarets’ midfielder has joined the League One promotion chasers on a youth loan running until the end of the season.

Howieson, who made two substitute appearances in the Championship for Burnley last season, will be available for Doncaster’s next five games before linking up with New Zealand’s under-20 squad for a series of World Cup qualifiers.

The 18-year-old is due to report to the Junior All Whites on 12 March with the qualifying tournament in Fiji running from 21-29 March.

He will then rejoin Rovers, who appointed ex-Clarets’ midfielder Flynn as manager last month following Dean Saunders’ departure to Wolves, with Burnley boss Sean Dyche seeing the move as another important step in Howieson’s development.

“I think it will be a really good one for him. Brian Flynn is someone local and someone I know and respect and I spoke to him recently about Cammie,” said Dyche.

“It will be a great experience for him, on and off the pitch, being at a different club with a different regime which are all the things that go into the melting pot of a young professional earning their spurs.”

Howieson, who signed a professional contract at Turf Moor at the end of last season after impressing in the Clarets’ youth set-up, joins Alex MacDonald, George Porter, Shay McCartan, Tom Anderson and Steve Hewitt out on loan.

“I am interested in all the young players getting as much chance to be around first-team football as possible at whatever level we deem appropriate,” Dyche added.
