Burnley's Zian Flemming learns Netherlands World Cup fate after 11-goal campaign
Burnley’s Zian Flemming has been left out of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad despite his 11-goal Premier League campaign.
Despite never being capped by his country, Flemming had hoped his eye-catching debut Premier League campaign would have been enough to earn a late call up.
But despite scoring 11 top flight goals in just 21 starts for a Burnley side that were relegated, Flemming has been left at home.
Former Claret Wout Weghorst, now at Ajax, has been selected ahead of him alongside Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey.
Ronald Koeman’s side kick off their World Cup campaign on June 14 against Japan, before further group games against Sweden and Tunisia.
Burnley’s interim boss Mike Jackson recently discussed Flemming’s World Cup chances.

“I'd love him to be [called up],” he said.
“He scored 10 goals in the Premier League [now 11]. He may not be everybody's cup of tea on the eye sometimes, but as a professional and what he's done to maximise his ability in everything that he does, I think it's an incredible achievement for him.
“You never know, something could happen where he gets called up, but I'd be delighted for him if that happened to him because the way he's applied himself has been tremendous.”
Flemming’s omission means there will be five Burnley players at this summer’s tournament in Zeki Amdouni (Switzerland), Hjalmar Ekdal (Sweden), Lyle Foster (South Africa), Hannibal (Tunisia), and Shurandy Sambo (Curacao).
While South Africa’s preliminary 55-man squad has yet to be cut down, it’s widely expected that Foster – a regular starter for Bafana Bafana – will make the final cut.
