Villa included first team regulars Jack Grealish and Leandro Bacuna while the likes of Joe Cole, Philipe Senderos, Kieran Richardson, Jores Okore, Tiago Llori, Libor Kozak and former Barcelona winger Adama Traore also featured.

Midfielder Grealish broke the away side’s resistance on the half hour when effortlessly finding the top corner once referee Andre Marriner had blown for a free kick.

And former Claret Gordon Cowan’s side doubled their advantage before the interval. Bacuna converted from the spot after Arlen Birch was deemed to have fouled Grealish.

The young Clarets pulled a deserved goal back with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when Steven Hewitt’s exquisite chip to Jamie Frost on the edge of the box needed just one touch, before the winger fired through Siegrist’s legs.

Frost flashed an effort narrowly wide of the upright in the closing stages but the Clarets failed to find the equaliser.
