Burnley unveil centenary shirt

The Clarets will wear this special replica shirt to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of their FA Cup triumph in Saturday’s Championship match with Ipswich Town at Turf Moor, which takes place almost exactly 100 years to the day of that famous victory.

On April 25, 1914, the Clarets won the world’s most prestigious cup competition after defeating Liverpool 1-0 at the Crystal Palace Grounds, courtesy of Bert Freeman’s goal.

The match was the first occasion that a reigning monarch, King George V, had attended an FA Cup final.

To celebrate that triumph, and in conjunction with the 1914 Exhibition currently on display at Towneley Hall, the specially commissioned claret and blue shirt will feature the Royal Coat of Arms instead of the usual club crest. Permission was sought from Buckingham Palace for the club to use this special crest.

The names of manager, John Haworth and the squad from that 1914 triumph are also commemorated on the shirt in a special panel embroidered in the bottom left hand corner of the shirt.

These shirts will not go on general sale to the public, due to the use of the Royal Crest.

However, the club will be hosting a unique auction for each shirt on the official website next week.
