Burnley striker Vokes out to add to goal tally

Burnley go to Bolton tonight with the pair having netted 39 in 35 games, 12 of which have come since New Year’s Day.

In terms of strike pairings, only Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, with 41, and various combinations of Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (26), Alvaro Negredo (23), Edin Dzeko (17) and Yaya Toure (15) have more in the top four divisions in England, but Vokes feels there are more to come, as their partnership continues to develop: “It’s going well. I got a few the week before and he got two on Saturday.

“It seems to be going well and hopefully we can get a few more.

“It’s come on since the start of the season. Obviously goals always make it look good but I think in general play we play well together and work hard.

“When you’re out there, it’s not necessarily off the cuff because there’s been a lot of hard work and we know what we’re all doing, but we’ve produced different types of goals and are working hard for each other.

“It’s working well and hopefully we can keep chipping in with goals.”

This time last year, Burnley went to Bolton, with Trotters boss Dougie Freedman saying of then top-scorer Charlie Austin: “We have done video work on him and we know exactly what his movements are and where he scores his goals.

“If you study him he scores the same kind of goals and then you understand how to stop him.”

Wanderers did stop Austin that day in a 2-1 win, but Vokes and Ings are a different kettle of fish, as the Wales international hopes to prove again tonight: “I’m sure they’ll have viewed us over the last few games, but we’ll be ready for that and how they’ll try and stop us playing.

“With our position in the table, we get that respect, and with the two of us, it’s a bit different because there’s two of us and a lot of teams play with one.

“That’s something else to test defenders.”

Vokes is kept informed of Wanderers’ progress by his neighbours, living in close proximity to Bolton, and he is hoping to claim the bragging rights: “It’s a tough one being a local derby but we’re going to go there full of confidence from the weekend.

“They’ve slipped up a few times and it’s a chance for us to go there and do that to them again.

“They’ve got a very strong squad and some good players with good experience so it’s not going to be an easy place to go. I don’t think we can go there thinking their position in the league means it’s a given.

“We need to go there full of confidence from the last couple of games and results and take that into this one.

“I won’t say too much, but it would be nice to win.”
