Forest came to Turf Moor on the back of a 14-game unbeaten run in the league, having only lost twice away from home all season.

But Burnley extended the only unbeaten home record in the Championship, blitzing Forest 3-1, with three goals in the first 35 minutes.

Vokes netted twice to take his tally to 18 for the season, and, asked whether Burnley had laid a marker down with a convincing win, the Wales international said: “That was our intention before the game.

“We said if we could put in a performance and get a result, it would put a big statement to the league and show what we’re about.

“I think we’ve done that.”

Burnley, with only three defeats in the league all season, are now 10 unbeaten in the Championship since their Boxing Day setback at Middlesbrough, and Vokes added: “It’s been a good run we’re on but we haven’t really looked at that.

“It’s just the next game that comes around, and if we can keep putting in performances like that we’ll be up there.

“We took seven points from three important games last week, and we knew going into the next three that they were going to be just as important.

“For us to start with a big three points is massive.”

Derby are next up at Turf Moor, with the Clarets 12 months without a loss in the league on home ground, and Vokes admitted: “We’re taking a lot of confidence from these home performances into the next one, and next week we’ve got another important one where we can start again like we did on Saturday.

“But we’ve seen anything can happen in this league so it’s just concentrating on our own performances.”
