Burnley striker Rodriguez promises more goals

The 22-year-old striker netted twice in the opening 15 minutes of the comprehensive 5-1 victory over Steve McClaren’s Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening. That contribution took his tally to seven goals in all competitions but he’s desperate to work hard and add more.

“I still need to keep working hard in every game and that’s what I’ll keep doing,” said Jay. “I don’t let anything get to me, it’s just one of those things. But I’ll keep trying my best to score as many goals as I can.”

He added: “I don’t really mind what people say, all I know is that I’m working hard and if the goals come they come.

“I like to score any goal, I don’t care if it went in any other way. I like to think I can score different types of goals, a variation, but I’m happy to score any goal.”

Strike partner Charlie Austin was also on the scoresheet in the rout and the pair now have 14 goals between them. Now Rodriguez is backing himself and Austin to get even better and fire the Clarets back up the Championship table.

“I was chuffed to get the two goals but the main thing was for the team to get the three points.

“Of course, I’m always happy to see Charlie score and help the team. You’re always happy to see your partner score. He set me up tonight and it’s a nice little partnership.

“We work hard at training as well at different types of finishing. It’s a nice little combination we’ve got and it’s a good friendship as well.”

The Clarets prodigy, who scored his second professional league goal in the 5-0 demolition over Forest at Turf Moor in March 2009, insists that there’s a profusion of belief among the squad and the quality to compete at this level.

“It’s been coming, the performance of the team,” he said. “We know we’ve been good enough, it was just putting it into play. We played a good team off the park, as you could see by the score. We just need to take into the next game on Saturday now.

“We all know we’ve got it, it’s just putting it into play. We’ve shown there what we can do and we just need to take it forward. It brings the confidence higher, to beat a team like Forest by that score. It puts everyone on a high.”
