Burnley striker Austin eyes club record

GOAL machine Charlie Austin is gunning for a club record at Bristol City tonight.

Austin’s winner against Blackpool last Saturday made it seven successive games in which the Clarets’ striker has got on the scoresheet.

And if he makes it eight out of eight at Ashton Gate he will match a club best run set by Ray Pointer in the 1958/59 season.

‘Blond Bombshell’ Pointer scored 12 goals in his ‘goal-den’ run of eight league and FA Cup games between November, 1958 and January the following year on his way to 29 goals for the season.

Austin is also on 12 goals during his current purple patch so another one tonight would put him out on his own for the most prolific scoring run in the club’s history.

And the 23-year-old, who has matched Bob Kelly, Bert Freeman and all-time record goalscorer George Beel in scoring in seven successive games, has his eyes on the record.*

“I don’t want to stop here. I want to go into Tuesday night and get a goal and then again on Saturday,” said Austin, whose total for the season now stands at 16.

“And as long as I keep scoring and the team keeps doing well, why can’t we keep pushing up the league?”

Austin’s first-half header against Blackpool, allied to a first clean sheet since the opening day of the season, gave the Clarets a first win in four games.

And the predatory striker hopes that will be the platform for an improved run, starting in Bristol and then taking in Saturday’s visit to joint Championship leaders Cardiff City on Saturday.

Austin added: “Maybe it was a derby game that we needed to kick-start us and hopefully that will be the case going into two massive away games.

“The lads are full of confidence so hopefully we can go down there and get some results.”

* Willie Irvine scored in seven successive League games in 1965 but drew a blank in two of the three League Cup ties he played during that run.
