Burnley set to make first outfield signing of the summer window

Having had six offers for the former Charlton man turned down in the summer of 2016, Sean Dyche appears to have finally got his man, subject to a medical later today, in a deal believed to be worth an initial £1m, which could go up to £2.5m with add ons.

Stephens, who is cup tied having played for the Seagulls in their Carabao Cup second round win over Portsmouth, is unable to feature in tonight's Carabao Cup tie at Milwall, but could be involved in Saturday's first Premier League home game against Southampton.

The 31-year-old, who was out of contract in the summer, will sign a two-year deal.

Burnley's sixth and final offer for the Bolton-born midfielder was in excess of £8m in the summer of 2016, but that was turned down, despite the player putting in a transfer request.

He later said on social media to Brighton fans: “This isn’t an apology but an explanation that you deserve.

“Yes I did submit a transfer request earlier today, which I was reluctant to do.

“The football club have been aware for 5 weeks I wanted to leave to fulfill my and every footballers ambitions of playing in the Premier League.

“I’m 27 years old and recognised this could be my final opportunity to do so, which is why I feel disappointed my chance was taken away.

“I prefer to give you honesty rather than shy away from my actions now the window is closed.

“I respect and understand your frustration as this is your football club. I have 10 months remaining and will honour my contract.”
