Burnley round off pre-season preparations with home win over Maritimo

Burnley rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 3-0 win at home to Portuguese side Maritimo.

The Clarets, with West Ham target James Tarkowski in the starting line-up, had an early sight of goal as Johann Berg Gudmundsson went close from Dwight McNeil’s low centre, before Chris Wood volleyed over a Charlie Taylor cross.

And Burnley went ahead when McNeil drifted in at the far post to head Phil Bardsley’s cross back into the opposite corner.

Jay Rodriguez forced a save, before the visiting keeper denied Gudmundsson and then Tarkowski.

Josh Brownhill then stung the keeper’s palms, before Rodriguez volleyed wise just before the break,

In the second half, McNeil went close to a second as he drilled an effort just wide, and Wood forced a save, as he looked to get on the scoresheet.

And he did just after the hour mark, as Gudmundsson delivered an in swinging cross, and the New Zealand frontman flicked a header home.

Erik Pieters and Matt Lowton came on for Taylor and Bardsley, before by a triple substitution, with Josh Benson, Matej Vydra and Robbie Brady replacing Ashley Westwood, McNeil and Rodriguez.

Vydra added a third from Wood’s pass, before Wood squandered the chance to make it 4-0, volleying over from Lowton’s cross.

Brady then curled a free kick over, as the Clarets signed off in impressive fashion, with no new injury worries.

Burnley starting XI: Pope, Bardsley, Tarkowski, Long, Taylor, Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Westwood (c), McNeil, Rodriguez, Wood.

Subs: Peacock-Farrell, Lowton, Brady, Pieters, Vydra, Dunne, Thomas, Benson, Norris.
