Burnley launch appeal over Trippier red card

Trippier was sent off by referee Robert Madley after the Burnley defender was ruled to have handled the ball on the line as he blocked a shot from Addicks defender Chris Solly - leaving the Clarets to play with ten men for 75 minutes.

The referee also awarded a penalty to Charlton, which was saved by Lee Grant, but Burnley believe the offence was not deliberate and should not have warranted a dismissal.

“We have had a look at the situation and at the video and my opinion has not changed from that straight after the game, that it was ball to hand and not hand to ball,” said manager Sean Dyche.

The FA Law covering fouls and misconduct says that an outfield player can be sent off for ‘denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball’.

In the FA’s document for interpretation of Law 12, it adds: ‘Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm.

‘The referee must take the following into consideration: the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand); the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball); the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement’.

Burnley believe they have a case to overturn the decision – and a potential one-match ban – and lodged an appeal with the FA ahead of Monday’s 1pm deadline.
