The Clarets were in contact with the Toffees about the right back - a long-time target of Sean Dyche - between Christmas and New Year, as they look for competition, or to replace, Matt Lowton and Phil Bardsley, who are both out of contract at the end of the season.

There has since been little progress as regards a deal for the England Under 21 international, although, as the clock ticks down towards 11 p.m. on Monday night, Burnley are still interested in the 23-year-old, who impressed in a season-long loan in the Bundesliga with Schalke last season.

Everton chief Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday afternoon, when asked about outgoings, with Cenk Tosun also linked with a move away from Goodison Park: "I have no news at the moment.

“We are not looking for other players. The players that are here like to stay here.

"I don't know if they are talking with other teams. They are our players and we will see if they are talking with others.

“I'm not going to ask until they talk to me [about it] - and until now they didn't."

However, while Burnley are yet to make an offer for the player, there is a growing belief a deal could be struck, with the player eager to boost his hopes of regular first team football, having only made seven appearances this season, three in the Carabao Cup.
