Last Thursday night, the former Leeds United keeper was one of Northern Ireland’s heroes as he saved fromHaris Hajradinovic in the penalty shoot-out victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, which keeps Ian Baraclough’s side in with a chance of reaching Euro 2020.

He picked up a minor hip injury in the warm-up which ruled him out of Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat in Norway.

But the 23-year-old has impressed in his first two Burnley appearances, both in the Carabao Cup, at Millwall and at home to Manchester City.

As ever, the goalkeeping department at the club looks in rude health, and boss Sean Dyche is delighted with his progress.

Nick Pope remains the clear number one for now, but Dyche said: “I don’t think he’s breathing down Popey’s neck, what he’s doing is showing what a good professional he is, and what an improving keeper he is.

“We think there’s a base to work from for us to continue the good work Billy (Mercer) does with the group, but he’s showing clear signs of improving.

“I once told Nick Pope, ‘look, you are improving, I can see it, we can all see it’.

“And then it’s when you get out there, that’s when you want to feel it as a player.”

Pope had to bide his time as he learned from Tom Heaton and Paul Robinson, so how hard is it to get a keeper to buy into a longer-term pathway?: “They get treated very well by Bill, and ourselves.

“They buy into the way it works and they’ve seen other keepers deliver from their position behind the curve.

“They’re growing into the role, so they’re trusting how it works.

“But really pleased for him, he’s working really hard in the gym, in training, and he’s now learning to stop the unstoppables, believing in that.

“He’s not fazed by one on one situations, he’s sharper, his reaction times are getting quicker, and he’s improving.

“I have said all along he is having a similar transition to Nick Pope.

“He is in the background and developing all the time.

"He has got a stature and has been working hard in the gym."
