Burnley goal hero Edgar hopes late strike has ended relegation worries

A run of two wins in 15 games saw the Clarets dragged to within three points of the bottom three, ahead of Saturday’s visit of Cardiff, who only needed a point to clinch the title.

And when Craig Conway curled the Bluebirds in front just after the half-hour, Burnley were up against it.

However, Edgar headed in Kieran Trippier’s cross late on, to give the Clarets some breathing space, with the gap now four points from 22nd place, with six to play for.

The versatile Canadian said: “You could sense the relief throughout the stadium and throughout the team.

“There are still two massive games to come that we know we can take six points from and that’s the aim, to finish the season on a high and put the looking over our shoulders behind us.

“It’s a crazy league. To even be in and around it after it seemed like we were doing really well, it’s tough to take. But that’s the situation we are in and we need to deal with it.”

There hadn’t appeared to be much anxiety around the club, despite the situation, and Edgar added: “We’ve been trying to keep things as normal as we can but it’s no secret – we all know the situation, we all know the league and the league table.

“It’s not so much an anxiety – we know we shouldn’t be here but we are and we just have to deal with it. The second half showed that we’re going to fight to the death here.

“I think it happens all the time. You get nervous, you’re in a situation where anything can happen, it was sort of a nervous first half but we settled down in the second half and we played it and we took the game to them.

“We came out with a bit more credit in the second half.”

Many fans have tried to predict who will go up and down, but Edgar hadn’t got involved in ifs and buts: “I try to shut myself off from that.

“We know if we go out there and play with freedom we’ll get the points. We know we’re a good enough side.

“We know we can get six points from the remaining games.”

Now he feels it is a case of who holds their nerve: “I think so – top and bottom. We saw that (on Friday night) with Hull.

“There’s nothing we can do other than put in a performance next week at Wolves.”
