'Look in the mirror': Nicky Hayen addresses Burnley's goalkeeping problem
Nicky Hayen addresses Burnley’s big goalkeeping problem
Nicky Hayen has vowed to “protect” his players despite Burnley’s major goalkeeping conundrum.
Max Weiss started the season as Burnley’s number one, playing the first seven league games. But Hayen was given no option but to drop the German after a series of high-profile errors.
Summer signing Gregoire Coudert has since come in and, despite a promising debut showing against Derby County, the Frenchman has also endured a torrid time of it himself.
The Clarets, who have shipped 21 goals in 11 games, have been far too easy to score against, with neither stopper able to demonstrate adequate shot-saving ability.
When it was put to Hayen that his Burnley side has a big goalkeeping problem, he replied: “Yes, but we win together, we lose together. I will always protect my players until the end, so that's not a problem.
“But I also hope that they look in the mirror and try to do their maximum best every single day again to change this situation.”
It comes after Coudert was culpable for Wolves’ winner on Friday night, despite Igor Julio’s initial mistake that led to the chance.
Tawanda Chirewa’s effort squirmed through his hands, up towards goal where it glanced off the underside of the crossbar and in.
“I have to see it,” Hayen said, when asked if Coudert should do better. “I cannot say.
“I see that he deflected the shot under the bar, but I have to see it. Like I said, I'm not a goalkeeper coach, so I will speak to my goalkeeper coach also.”
