‘It’s a grind’: JJ Watt on Burnley’s quest to end yo-yoing between Premier League and Championship
JJ Watt discusses what is required to end Burnley’s yo-yoing
Burnley are constantly yearning to learn their lessons from their recent failed attempts to stay in the Premier League.
That’s the verdict of Clarets minority shareholder JJ Watt, who admits it’s been a “grind” trying to come to terms with the top flight in recent seasons.
It comes as the club head back to the Championship this season, licking their wounds from a miserable 22-point campaign under Scott Parker.
Just two years ago, meanwhile, Vincent Kompany oversaw a similarly energy-sapping campaign as Burnley were relegated with just 24 points to their name.
With the days of Premier League stability now gone, Watt knows the club hierarchy must learn and learn quickly.
“Our first couple of months, we were in the Championship and then we got promoted and won the league, so we were on the parade floats through downtown Burnley like the kid who joined the project at the last second and still got a medal,” he told reporters ahead of the final friendly of the US tour.
“We were like: ‘this is awesome, this is great’ but then of course we go back down and we go back up. But we certainly enjoyed promotion more than relegation.
“Each time you learn a little bit more. You’re trying to compete but there’s a gigantic financial piece to this. Nobody is denying the fact that money talks in these leagues and especially at that level, when you have sides like Manchester City sitting on the numbers they’re putting out.
“When you’re in a situation like ours, you have to learn and grow and find a way to be efficient with the way you spend your money, the way you’re scouting, the way you’re recruiting so the team you’re putting out on the field can compete.
“It’s a grind and we’ve seen both sides of it. We want to be better.”
