The EFL squad list rules that await Burnley back in the Championship
The Clarets return to the Championship next season
A return to the Championship next season means a return to EFL squad restrictions for Burnley.
The Clarets return to the second tier after another miserable campaign in the Premier League, where they finished 19th with just 22 points to their name.
With Scott Parker leaving by mutual consent at the end of April, Burnley remain on the hunt for their new man who will be tasked with returning the club to the top flight at the first attempt once again.
Like in the Premier League, Championship clubs are limited to naming 25 players. In League’s One and Two, clubs are only permitted to name 22 ‘senior’ players.
Eight of the 25 must be home-grown, a player, regardless of nationality, that has been registered with any club associated with the English or Welsh FA for at least three years prior to turning 21.
Of last season’s squad, 12 players fell into this category.
Any player aged 21 or under doesn’t have to be included in the 25-man squad. However, any loan player – irrespective of age – must be included.
A player is deemed to be an ‘Under-21’ if they are under the age of 21 as of January 1 of the year in which the season starts. For the 2026/27 campaign, this is someone born on or after January 1, 2005.
Each club must submit its squad list to the EFL within 24 hours of the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
The Clarets must also abide by new financial rules in the Championship next season following a recent vote.
Squad-cost ratio will limit clubs to spending 85 per cent of revenue on squad costs, which includes: wages, transfer fees and agent fees.
