Burnley player ratings vs Ajax as standout man earns 7/10
Player ratings from Burnley’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Ajax
Burnley suffered their third defeat of pre-season with a 2-1 reversal to Ajax - but there was plenty to be positive about.
Nicky Hayen’s side put on an encouraging showing, especially during the first-half, on their travels to Amsterdam.
Jaydon Banel got their goal in the second half, but there were plenty of other Burnley players who managed to catch the eye.
Here’s how Burnley’s players rated:
Player ratings
Max Weiss - 6
Looked to invite the press with the ball at his feet. Should have done better for the first Ajax goal, which was a poor error.
Connor Roberts - 7
Encouraged to get forward and offer himself in space, more akin to how we saw him in action under Vincent Kompany.
Kyle Walker - 7
Helped build the play up from centre back again, rather than full back. Happy to come out of position to progress the ball forward.
Bashir Humphreys - 7
Calm and collected in possession and, like Walker, happy to leave his position to offer himself for the ball. Perhaps a bit fortunate not to give away a penalty.
Lucas Pires - 6
Similar story to Roberts - happy to bomb on and attack from deep. But undone too easily for the first Ajax goal and too late getting back for third.
Josh Laurent - 6
Tested the keeper with a rasping 25-yard drive and brought drive to the midfield, but needs to crispen up his passing. Too often wayward.
Hannibal - 7
Pulled the strings at times, especially during the first half, on his return from the World Cup. Blazed over with a wasteful finish from the edge of the box though.
Aaron Ramsey - 7
Looked really bright early on, when he managed to get into some good spaces into the number 10 role and cause some danger.
Marcus Edwards - 6
Created a good chance for Hannibal and had one or two sighters of goal, but otherwise relatively quiet over on the right wing.
Jacob Bruun Larsen - 6
Bright during the opening exchanges, but couldn’t quite maintain it. Lacked a bit of quality and conviction with his final ball. Slight surprise to see him start amid Copenhagen speculation.
Jaydon Banel - 7
Temporarily got Burnley back on level terms with a clever finish against his former side, although I’m not sure how much he knew about it!
Selected subs
Mike Tresor - 6
For Bruun Larsen, 46
Will be a little disappointed not to hit the target with his enticing 25-yard free-kick, but took great care of the ball and brings quality. Great to see him involved nevertheless.
Luca Koleosho - 6
For Edwards, 46
It was his shot that led to Burnley’s equaliser, as Banel diverted it into the far corner. Looked to drive and get at his man.
