Burnley FC hero Ray Pointer celebrates golden wedding anniversary

Ray Pointer, who played centre-forward for the Clarets from 1957 to 1964, was the second top goal-scorer with 19 goals in that memorable 1959-60 season when Burnley were crowned champions of England.

The 74-year-old met Marilyn, a Burnley girl, shortly after he arrived in the town where he signed his first professional contract.

The couple, who now live in Blackpool, were married at St Stephen’s Church, Burnley Wood, and honeymooned in Jersey.

Daughter Ann-Marie said: “Dad was living in digs in Burnley when he met mum. She used to live in Parkinson Street and was a big support to dad during his career.

“Dad was born in Northumbria, but Burnley will always be his team. He loved the town and the club. He achieved so much there and was later a coach at Turf Moor after he retired from playing.

“He also ran a sandwich shop in the town.”

Pointer made 223 appearances for the Clarets scoring 118 goals, and later played for Bury, Coventry City and Portsmouth. He also won three England caps, scoring two international goals in 1961.

The couple have three children, Stephen, Ann-Marie and Jonathan, as well as six grandchildren.

Ann-Marie added: “Dad is still fit as an ox. They have enjoyed looking after the grandchildren in their retirement.

“I think football was more gentlemanly back then and I’m not sure mum would have liked to be a WAG!

“Dad was last on Turf Moor for the Norwich game this season when he made the half-time draw.”
