Burnley FC boss Brian Laws ‘perfect time to turn round season’

CLARETS boss Brian Laws is not feeling the pressure ahead of the team’s busy festive period but admits results are now a must.

After recent postponements Burnley have seen their league position slip but Laws feels now is the perfect time to turn the season around and get the team heading in the right direction in the New Year.

“The one thing we feel is that this is a great opportunity where we can turn the season around and be in a much stronger position at the end of it. So I’m looking at it in a positive way.

“This is a great opportunity for us to get this run going and the players are fully aware of that. We can’t just do it in small periods, we have to do it for longer and we’re more than capable of that. The lads are in a good frame of mind and are champing at the bit to get out there.

“I’ve been in the game long enough to know that you’re under pressure from day one. Nothing changes from day one because you are always seeking results. We’re in a results based business and that invariably brings pressure so it’s nothing new.

“Does it worry me? No. It doesn’t affect me and it doesn’t change my thoughts or the way we approach games. We know he have good players here and that we are capable of putting a good run together. That’s what we are craving for and what we demand.”

Laws feels the recent postponements have not helped but the squad is looking a lot stronger as a result.

“The disappointing thing from my point of view is we’ve had two games postponed. The good thing is that it’s allowed a couple of my players to be in a position where they are fit, which means I know Ill have them for them particular games. Danny Fox is now fully fit and ready to go, Chris Eagles is fully fit and ready to go and Martin Paterson is there and there abouts. So we know now that we are in a good position in terms of the squad.

“The downside of the games being postponed is that the teams around us haven’t and they’ve capitalised on that. As a result we’ve dropped down the league but it’s so tight in this division.

“We’ve got to go on a run of games now, there’s no doubt about it. We haven’t really had one yet. We’ve been there and there abouts and I think this is great opportunity to put one together now.

“We’ve been hungry and waiting for this game to come along against Barnsley and then we have two homes games on the bounce. Over the next four or five games, if we get a good haulage of points it will immediately throw us back into that top six and put us in a strong position again.”

Burnley travel to Oakwell on Boxing Day having not won there since 1932.

Laws however feels it is the perfect match to help turn the team’s fortunes around after the disappointment of the Leeds game.

“When you’ve lost a game, the one thing you want to do is react and get it back quickly and that’s what we’ve been doing. If we’ve lost a game we’ve got back on the bike and got a result.

“We’ve had to wait and wait now. The Leeds disappointment is still fresh in our minds but we’ve had to wait a fortnight. The lads just want to get out there and put it right. We’ve been very reactive when we’ve lost and we’ve not lost two on the bounce in the league this season.

“We’re going into the game very positive. I know historically we’ve got a poor record at Barnsley and it’s about time we put it right. That’s a record that we need to break.

“We’ve played them already this season. It’s probably the best 90 minutes of football we’ve played over a period and we deservedly won and so that’s fresh in their minds as well. They’re probably one of the in-form teams of the division at the minute but it’s a good place to go.”
