Defeat at home to Swansea City on Saturday left the Clarets in the bottom three on goal difference, with Sean Dyche’s side facing five of the Premier League’s top seven in the forthcoming weeks, starting with in-form Liverpool.

Games against Manchester City, Southampton, Spurs and Arsenal follow on from the clash against the Reds, but Vokes remains defiant, drawing inspiration from the draws at Manchester City and Chelsea: “We are going into a tough period now, but we know we have to go to these places and pick up points, which we have done all season.

“We know it’s a chance gone. The boys are gutted. But we have to pick our heads up and go to Liverpool with confidence after the results we got at the likes of City and Chelsea and show what we’re about.

“I know you can look at them as bonus games but they’re games we need to pick up points from now because we dropped them on Saturday, so we need to go into them confident from the performances we have given against strong sides.

“We have been written off all season and proved people wrong so if we can do that again on Wednesday it will be great.

“We have gone to the top two in the country and got results so we are capable.”

After Tom Heaton’s own goal settled the fixture at Turf Moor at the weekend, and extended the club’s record to one win in 13 in all competitions, Vokes admitted: “It was frustrating. We knew we had to pick up points on Saturday but we haven’t and now we go into a couple of tough games knowing we have to get something.

“We had a few chances and at the start of the second half we started the stronger and I think from their first passage they got a set-piece and scored from.

“That’s what this league can do to us. We know that and we’ve got to stop it.”

After a nine-month spell on the sidelines, Vokes made his return to action in the Boxing Day clash against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Turf Moor where he replaced Ashley Barnes in the 80th minute.

And he’s hopeful of adding to his seven league outings against the Europa League dropouts. “It was a special day,” he said.

“It was great for me to get on the pitch and it would be nice to do that again on Wednesday.”
