The Clarets bossed the first half, with Danny Ings hitting the post before Scott Arfield had a goal-bound effort deflected agonisingly wide by Lucas Leiva.

However, Raheem Sterling netted his third goal in three games after the break from a rare Liverpool attack to pinch the points.

But Rodgers, manager at Watford when Sean Dyche was youth team boss in 2008/09, has seen enough to feel his old colleague can pull off the impossible: “Yes he can keep them up, I think he’s doing a brilliant job with the resources that he has.

“He’s got the team super-organised, a lot of hard-working players, obviously a lot come up from the Championship, a lot of British players.

“Once they got that first victory, that gave them confidence, and you saw here, they made it a difficult game, as they do for any team - away at Tottenham, it was close and they had chances.

“I think if he does keep them up, he’ll have done an incredible job, but the team is in every game so they have a great chance.”
