Burnley boss pleased with ‘open-minded’ Jutkiewicz

The 25-year-old scored his sixth goal on six pre-season games in the 3-1 win over Verona on Saturday, and boss Sean Dyche is delighted he has taken on board some of the things he has worked with him on in training.

Jutkiewicz arrived in the summer from Middlesbrough in a deal which could rise to £2.25m, and has put himself in pole position for a start against Chelsea on Monday night as Burnley open their Premier League campaign.

Dyche said: “I’m really pleased for him.

“We’ve done a bit of work with him, chatted to him about a few things we think can aid his progress.

“I believe in obviously winning, but I believe in developing as well and we try to work with the players wisely, and he’s very open minded.

“I like players like that. He’s willing to listen and willing to put into action what we think is appropriate.

“When he scored I pulled him over and had a word and said ‘We were just talking about that yesterday’ (Friday), where he’s moving, why he’s moving, the pace he’s moving at.

“So I’ve been pleased and he’ll obviously be pleased.”

Jutkiewicz’s strike partner Danny Ings, in contrast, is without a pre-season goal, but did everything but score in an effervescent display against the Italians.

Dyche was pleased with the Championship player of the year’s efforts: “I thought Ingsy was super sharp in the second half - electric in fact at times, so I was really pleased to see that.

“The keeper’s made two marvellous saves, but he looked ever so sharp in the second half.”

Michael Kightly also got his first action of pre-season after a minor knee operation, with only Sam Vokes unavailable.
