Burnley boss Dyche’s praise at best display of his first year

Dyche brings up 12 months at Turf Moor tomorrow, top of the Championship after seven successive league wins, the latest bringing an end to title favourites QPR’s unbeaten start.

Asked if it was the best display in his time at the club, he said: “I think because of the nature of the opposition it is. I think there have been some very good performances but because of the fact it’s arguably the biggest game of the day in our division against a team with a great manager and a very strong group of players and very strong record so far – with all of that, and then to give the performance we did, it makes it one of the best if not the best.

“But I could have said that against Reading the other week. I thought that was a fine performance and there have been quite a few lately, so it’s a good position to be in.”

He looked back on the latest impressive win: “I’m very pleased – delighted with the things I talk about a lot, the tactical framework of the team, the understanding the players are finding, the energy, the effervescence of the team but most of all the quality. I thought some of the quality was absolutely excellent.

“The first goal was good enough to grace most pitches – the movement, the link play, the pace of it and of course the quality of the finish. There were many good things.

“I thought we played really well in the first half and had some good half chances. We were on the front foot and we were looking to penetrate and open them up. But they’re a very good side obviously, they’ve only conceded four goals, so it’s not as easy. Words are easy, delivering it is different.

“Overall I was very happy with the first half but made it clear to the players at half-time that they were going to have to go even harder because they’re not an easy group of players to crack.

“I was really pleased with the endeavour and the tempo and also the quality to open them up and score and Ingsy to get the penalty as well.”

Ings scored both goals, assisted by Sam Vokes, and the pair have 21 goals between them so far this season.

Dyche said, on the day Charlie Austin endured a miserable return to Turf Moor: “I think him and Sam Vokes have been excellent.

“I don’t think they’ve over thought the fact that Charlie was here and then he left. I think they just thought ‘great, a better chance of me playing’.

“That’s what they should be thinking and I’m sure that’s what they did, and they’ve been delivering performances on the back of that.

“There’s been good growth in their mentality to deliver performances and good shifts in their quality and their level of performance.

“But I’m pleased for the group.

“There are question marks, like at any club.

“I value the fact that the board rightly so came out and told what they think is the right thing to tell the fans, which is the truth. We haven’t got bags full of money. We have to work with a limited squad because of that.

“But I made it clear within that there are some really positive things, and there were last season, it’s just that people don’t see it.

“The first team playing out there is a massive marker of what you’re trying to achieve and where you’re going, but there’s so much good work done at this football club behind the scenes, both at

the training ground, the ground in general, links with the community. I value all of it.

“It’s just that that (results) are what you’re measured on every week.”
