Mexico striker Raul Jimenez volleyed a superb opener 14 minutes from time in a tight clash, with the Clarets looking for the points to move within two of the visitors.

But, having somehow headed wide of an open net at the death, Wood was given a second bite of the cherry after a handball from Matt Doherty, slamming a spot kick into the roof of the net, as Burnley extended their run to one defeat in 14 Premier League games,

Adama Traore, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Vinagre and Diogo Jota all came back into the side, as Pedro Neto, goalscorer Leander Dendoncker, Jonny and Matt Doherty all dropped to the bench.

After initially starting on the front foot, Burnley were soon forced back by Wolves, who used the pace of Adama Traore to good effect.

Traore, at right wing back, went at Charlie Taylor from the off, with Dwight McNeil having to be diligent to get out and help when he could.

And it was from a Traore centre that Wolves had the first sight of goal, as Raul Jimenez headed at Nick Pope, after the Spaniard raced past McNeil and Taylor.

Shortly after Romain Saiss headed a Joao Moutinho corner high and wide at the near post, but you sensed a Wolves goal was coming.

However, Pope was well protected, not having to field any golden opportunities, although he had to claw a Traore cross behind, with Taylor glancing Moutinho's subsequent corner out for another.

Taylor was forced off injured shortly after, with Erik Pieters reverting to left back, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson coming on on the right of midfield.

Wolves remained in the ascendancy, but Burnley finally had half an opening when Jay Rodriguez turned and volleyed over after taking down Ashley Westwood's early ball.

Wolves again threatened, as Diogo Jota fired into the side netting from Daniel Podence's ball over the top, as Pieters came over and closed down his sight of goal.

Burnley were dangerous on the counter, and from a Wolves corner right on half-time, Conor Coady did well to block Rodriguez from Gudmundsson's fine centre, after Josh Brownhill sent the Iceland international away down the left.

Shortly after the restart, Matej Vydra came on for Rodriguez, but Burnley again had work to do defensively, with Jimenez firing over after squaring up Pieters from a Wolves counter.

But for Ruben Neves, Brownhill might have given Burnley the lead from Chris Wood's flick, the Portuguese midfielder making a vital block, after Saiss had clumsily bumped the Burnley man.

Could that have been a penalty? You've seen them given for less.

At the other end, Podence, at the end he scored at two years ago for Olympiakos, pulled a shot narrowly wide of the near post.

That was Podence's last involvement, as he was replaced by Matt Doherty at the drinks break.

And Doherty was involved in the opener 14 minutes from time as Traore broke through the middle of the pitch, where he should have been stopped, legally or not.

He fed Doherty on the right, and his shot took a fortunate break to Jimenez, but my didn't he take advantage, unleashing a superb strike into the corner.

Robbie Brady came on for Brownhill as Burnley searched for an equaliser, but Wolves might have added a second as Pedro Neto's shot was well saved by Pope with his feet.

However, after Wood wasted a big chance to claim a point, he didn't pass up a second from the spot, as Dyche's side again showed they don't know when they are beaten.
