In five matches against teams from the top 10, the Clarets have collected five points - including magnificent recoveries at champions Manchester City and Newcastle United.

After failing to win in their first 10 games, Burnley have since won three, lost three and drawn four, but Dyche said: “Cautiously optimistic is only being honest.

“I believe totally in what myself, the staff and players do - the difference this season is purely the level, from the outside looking in, the quality of the teams you play, so there has to be balance to that.

“But my belief has been unshakable since the first ball was kicked, I believe in everything we do and I believe in the players, and they believe in themselves.

“Even in the first 10 games we were nice and calm, I said ‘we’ll win games lads, make no mistake’.

“There are good signs, but that has to continue and we have to get more points on the board.

“The facts are we are still in the bottom three, but the performances show great signs of achieving more than that.”
