Speculation suggested that a deal in the region of £4m had been struck between the two clubs but Dyche acted swiftly to reject claims that the 23-year-old was on his way to the KC Stadium.

“There’s been no agreement reached,” he said. “The noises are just the same because there’s people hovering and clubs interested but nothing is appropriate for us at this time so he’s getting on with pre-season for us.

“There’s no reason to think any different until it becomes any different. He’s fine, he’s in good shape, listening to what we think is appropriate and he’s enjoyed himself since coming back for pre-season.”

The former Swindon Town hotshot notched 28 goals in all competitions last term and that’s a good enough reason for Dyche to keep his prized assets on the books at Turf Moor, though he accepts that finances may eventually dictate his future.

“We want to keep the best players at the club but there is that reality with the financial situation that we have to work within,” said Dyche. “We’re just monitoring it as it unfolds. We want good players in the building and we want to work with good players. In pre-season we’re in the testing stage and checking on the welfare of the players but Charlie has come back in good shape and he’s looking to crack on.”

The Burnley boss insists that the phones are getting busier - with enquiries both ingoing and outgoing - but he refused to name targets in a week where Kevin Davies and Port Vale’s potent striker Tom Pope were rumoured to be in his sights.

“There’s a number of players that we’re interested in so you could throw 10 names at me,” Dyche said. “We’re certainly in the market and we’re certainly looking to improve the squad and build a side that can challenge on a weekly basis and be really competitive.”
