Weather denies rampant Read!

A STRONG bowling performance from Read was not enough to see them to victory as the weather saved Settle from certain defeat.

A Jon Harvey-inspired attack, including former Settle pro Stuart Hornby saw Settle restricted to just 117-9 for their innings but the rain ensured Read dropped points in their quest to close in on Ribblesdale League leaders Baxenden.

After being set a target of 68 from 19 overs, Read managed to reach 35-1 off eight overs before the game was abandoned.

Frustrated captain Warren Eastham said it was definitely an opportunity missed.

“After dominating them all day it was extremely frustrating,” he said. “The weather messed us about really and they didn’t seem in any hurry to score runs during their innings either. We were on 34 after just eight overs and we would have easily reached the target. It was hard work because the weather was miserable and it was pitch black but we still would have been confident about reaching the total.”

He added that maybe the team needed to find a bit more of a killer instinct if they were to overhaul Baxenden at the top of the table.

“We’ve still not lost a game this season and yet we’re 13 points behind top. We haven’t been picking up bonus points and we just have to locate a bit more of that killer instinct to help get us up there.” Read host Baxenden on Saturday and Padiham on Sunday.
