But Nelson were denied a place in the Worsley Cup Final the following day as they lost out to holders Burnley.

Against Todmorden, Nelson won the toss and decided to bat. McGladdery and Lewis Bradley opened and were making steady progress until the latter turned for a second run and was run out for 8.

Toxy Hussain came in and played a supporting role as McGladdery really opened up. The 17-year­-old brought up his 50 in the 22nd over, hitting his sixth four, and then raced to his first Lancashire League century – his second 50 coming off just 18 balls.

Hussain reached his own 50 off 74 balls, and their partnership was worth 186 when Paul Senior bowled Hussain for 67. Nelson were 216-2 with eight overs remaining.

Ryan Canning came in but found it difficult to pierce the field initially. McGladdery, however, was growing in confidence and hit Stuart Priestley, Elliott Gilford and Senior for sixes in quick succession.

The record league score by a Nelson amateur was 143, scored by Sean Lemon in 2008 against Colne, but McGladdery passed that and completed his 150 (from 152 balls). He was out three balls later, caught at fly­slip off a thick edge for 151. He hit 13 fours and 4 sixes.

In the remaining overs, Canning hit 25 off 22 balls and Russell Bradley 26 off 12 to give Nelson a massive 289-3.

Both Todmorden openers went cheaply but Ben Pearson and professional Michael Neser put on 77 for the third wicket.

Gilford made a rapid 19 but Sam Halstead took a steepling catch at long­on to start a mini­collapse. Andrew Sutcliffe and Neser collided in mid­pitch, and, with both batsmenspread­eagled on the ground, Sutcliffe was run out.

Stuart and Freddie Priestley were both out to stunning catches – Stuart by Lewis Bradley at cover, Freddie by Ryan Canning at deep square­leg.

Nelson had eyes on the bowling bonus points with Todmorden on 168-8 and 14 overs left. But Neser began hitting fours and sixes, going from 74 to 122 off only 24 balls, with new partner Senior also hitting out.

However, with Todmorden on 230, the rain came, the last six overs were never bowled, and Todmorden’s revised target was 263, giving Nelson victory by 33 runs.

Sunday saw Burnley entertain Nelson in the Worsley Cup semi-final at Turf Moor.

Having won the toss, the home side elected to bat and Dan Pickup and professional Chris Holt opened up, but were cautious in the first 15 over power play, with only 30 on the scoreboard.

This steady progress continued, with the home side 59-0 off the first 25 overs.

The acceleration started as Holt (42) and Pickup went at eight an over as 40 came off the first five overs after drinks, until Holt holed out to Canning off Thompson.

This brought in chairman Michael Brown, who hit 54 off 41 balls before he was caught at long on off McGladdery at 162-2.

Pickup eventually holed out off McGladdery for 70. Cameo performances from wicket keeper Chris Burton 33 off 23 balls and Michael Kelly (24) ended on 248.

In reply, Nelson soon got to 56 after 10 overs in the power play. But skipper Bharat Tripathi made the breakthrough when he got McGladdery for 38 when he clipped one to Aidan Tate at point.

The bowlers started to exert pressure and the run rate began to fall. Pickup bowled Lewis Bradley for 21 and the pressure began to tell when Jhangier Liaqat had Hussain (14) caught in the gully, and when Canning flashed hard at Cole Hayman and edged to third man, and Liaqat took a diving catch.

Wickets fell at regular intervals with Kelly and Holt taking two wickets apiece and Hayman finished the innings when he sent the stumps flying to bowl Nelson out for 172.

Nelson host Burnley on Sunday.
