Selfless Burnley cricket coach Ali’s worthy award

Ali, who hails from Nelson and previously played for Colne, was presented with a coaching certificate by the former England star the 2nd Natwest Series ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley Carnegie, Leeds, as part of the Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme

More than 100 coaches from across the county are being acknowledged by the programme’s “Reward and Recognition” scheme which comprises a series of on-pitch presentations throughout the summer by various cricketing legends.

Ali, is the junior head coach at Burnley Cricket Club, and since his arrival has helped the junior section go from strength to strength; in particular the girls’ team.

Ali’s promotion of girls’ cricket within the town has seen and an increase in opportunities for girls form the area and the club now has a competitive girls’ team for the first time in its history.

As a result of his delivery of structured coaching programmes and competitions through the “Chance to Shine” cricket programme and his work in primary and secondary schools, Ali has also played a vital role in raising the profile of cricket across Burnley, encouraging young people to pursue cricket as an interest outside of the school environment.

Following the presentation, Ali said: “It’s an honour to even be shortlisted for an award such as this. The Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme has identified key resources to help young cricketers better themselves, as well as passing on information that is ready and available. It’s met so many coaches’ needs, and put a huge amount of money and resources into grassroots cricket. It’s great to be associated with such a scheme.”
