The Arbories skipper lauded the contribution of visiting overseas amateur Lehann Janse Van Rensburg as the talented teenage South African dazzled the field with a display that included 134 runs with the bat and five wickets with the ball.

The 19-year-old plundered 15 fours and half-a-dozen sixes as the away side totalled 261-9 from their alloted 45 overs.

Van Rensburg then claimed 5-92 in a 12.1 over spell as Padiham were bowled out for 155 in 24.1 overs.

“We came up against a superstar in the making against Brinscall on Saturday,” said Clarke. “Lehann Janse Van Rensburg is the club’s overseas amateur and he’s just 19-years-old.

“He scored 134 and took five wickets in reply. It was just one of those days where a player of his calibre took a huge liking to our ground and bowlers.

“We let ourselves down a little in the fielding with a few dropped catches and too many wasteful balls. But I’ll be drawing a line under this one because we were beaten by a very talented South African all-rounder.”

Meanwhile, Read failed to back up their opening day victory over Cherry Tree as they lost to recently relegated Barnoldswick.

The away side, champions of the Ribblesdale Cricket League in 2012, but demoted to the second tier under the revised structure last term, performed imperiously at Whalley Road.

Having beaten rivals Earby by 10 wickets last weekend, Barnoldswick registered an astounding 100-run triumph on this occasion.

Matt Nutter, after his century against Earby, struck 80 with Abdul and Umar Saddique making 165 runs between them as their side accumulated the highest score of the weekend. Kyle Marshall’s 5-91 helped dismiss the home side for 199.

Stand-in Read skipper Joey Marshall, deputising for Kyle O’Connor, said: “Things didn’t go to plan.

“They batted first on a good track and scored well from the start, reaching an imposing 299-3.

“We couldn’t afford any slip ups but we were hindered by three key decisions going against us. Nabil Ahmed fired 85 but his efforts couldn’t prevent defeat.

“We have to step our game up for next weekend. We know what we are capable of but we can’t afford to be complacent.”

• Scorecards will appear in Friday’s Express Sport.
