Burnley re-write Lancashire League record books by creating Worsley Cup history!

Man of the match Vishal Tripathi helped the away side register a 118-run victory with a fine knock of 60.

The 27-year-old’s 90-run stand for the opening wicket alongside professional Chris Holt (28) proved pivotal in the tie’s conclusion.

Nelson youngster Harrison Phelan slowed the run rate of the defending champions after Sam Halstead and skipper Neil Thompson struggled to impact, and then paid man Qaiser Abbas made the breakthrough after being introduced to the bowling attack.

The former Pakistan Test cricketer forced Holt to slip in only his second over where he was brilliantly dismissed by Khurram Nazir at full stretch.

Holt’s replacement, David Brown, brought up three figures in the 22nd over with a cover driven boundary off Phelan before Tripathi’s innings culminated at the halfway point when stumped by Russell Bradley off Abbas having fired five fours and two sixes from 82 deliveries.

Jonny Clare joined Brown, with the latter eventually sent packing courtesy of a fine return catch from Phelan with 13 runs to his name.

Chris Burton (17) stepped in at 120-3 and added 40 runs alongside Clare before the combination of Nazir and Phelan cut his afternoon short.

Michael Brown went lbw to Nazir having made just five runs and Steve Brunt (11) fell victim to the combination of Nazir and Phelan with the scoreboard reading 186-6.

Clare went with the total at 197 having struck 40 from 61 balls before getting clean bowled by Abbas.

Captain Bharat Tripathi (3), Cole Hayman (2) and Jhangir Liaqat (5) concluded the innings to take the tally up to 206 in the final over.

Abbas finished with figures of 4-19 while Nazir added 4-39 as the spinners proved prolific in the finale.

Nelson’s Bradley brothers, Lewis and Russell, headed the home side’s response but the latter was extinguished in just the fourth over with his personal contribution of two runs leaving the score at 6-1.

His elder sibling was excellently caught behind by Burton off Clare after accumulating 12 runs and the hosts were 26-2.

Phelan (10) was joined by Abbas as Burnley introduced Lawson and Hayman. Burton’s safe hands ended Phelan’s involvement after Abbas had brought up 50 in the 13th over.

The pro was looking dangerous as he climbed to 33 but his removal, when caught behind by Burton off Hayman, sparked Nelson’s decline.

The hosts crashed from 73-4 to 88 all out with 20 overs remaining. Holt claimed 5-7 off six overs for the champions.

“It’s not quite sunk in yet that we’ve won a third trophy,” said Vishal. For this moment We’re going to enjoy this third trophy that we’ve won in the Worsley Cup.

“Hopefully we can try and break that record next year. We’ll go for the fourth one next year and a fifth the year after if we win that one. It’ll take some doing to beat. We’re still hoping to go one better next year.

“Every single player in this team has done great and we’ve done well to get this third trophy. It was a good team performance and we all deserve it.

“I’m a bit upset I couldn’t get to three figures, I know I was 40 runs short, but it was all about helping my team get over the line. That’s been my goal all season. To be man of the match is great and I’ll happily take it.”

His younger Sibling, Bharat, who has skippered the club to all three Worsley Cup triumphs, added: “To lead a team to three wins feels great. It’s fantastic for the club and that’s the main thing really.

“It becomes a bit of a carnival day with a carnival atmosphere. It shows off the history and tradition of the whole league. So many people want to win this cup so to win it three times is fantastic. We’ve taken part in three brilliant days. Occasions like this give you memories that you can talk about and achievements you can look back on.”

He added: “The 2013 win was phenomenal because it was at home in front of our own support and we’d won it for the first time in 29 years. The game last year at Rawtenstall was all about defending it, which was huge for us and lifted our season, and this year we produced, worked hard and this is the biggest because we set a record.

“It’s always great to win a trophy as a one off is fantastic because you’ve achieved something but to do it again is the mark of a great side and says a lot about the club. We’ve played as a team and stood up on the big occasions. It’s not just for the team, it’s for the whole club.

“It was the biggest game in the club’s history today. We had the chance to create some history - and we did it!”
