Commonwealth gold medal for ace Aneila

Outstanding Burnley College Sixth Form Centre A Level student Aneila Afsar beat off tough competition to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships in Edinburgh.

Aneila won 3-1 in the first bout of the competition, before defeating her Australian opponent in the second round by technical knock-out.

She then claimed the gold with an outstanding 13-8 victory in the final of the competition.

The former Pendle Vale College student is a member of Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s Elite Athlete Programme, a unique programme designed to maximise the potential of the College’s most talented athletes through personalised training and support.

Aneila took up Taekwondo 10 years ago at the age of six.

And she has since won medals in a huge number of regional, national and international competitions.

As well as being part of the College’s Elite Athlete Programme, Aneila also trains with Team GB in Manchester on weekends, with the Ultimate Taekwondo team in Doncaster on weekdays and continues her strength and conditioning training every week in Nelson.

She is now aiming to attract sponsorship to help her achieve her dream of becoming an Olympic athlete, with her eyes firmly set on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Aneila said: “Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s Elite Athlete Programme has given me access to the facilities and support I need to further my development as an athlete.

“My future career aspirations are to become a full time athlete and fulfilling my Olympic dream, and it’s amazing that Burnley College Sixth Form Centre and all the tutors are helping me to achieve this.”
