Coaches' prestigious academy places

These Sir John Thursby Community College pupils have collectively gained five out of only 30 places available across the county at a reputable coaching academy.

Year 9 and 10 pupils Hibah Tabassam, Sienna Rattigan, Tyler Young, Leah Allen and Olivia McGlinchey beat back stiff competition from 83 secondary schools to make the cut for Youth Sports Trust’s Young Coaches Academy.

The scheme has been designed to create clearer pathways between the development of young coaches in schools to the community setting.

As part of the initiative, the pupils have been invited to attend a conference and a training day at the University of Central Lancashire.

They can also undertake National Governing Body courses and complete coaching modules with the Youth Sports Trust.

Headteacher David Burton said: “For our school to have achieved so many of the positions shows how much our pupils’ applications impressed the judging panel to secure these prestigious roles.“The pupils are a credit to themselves, their families, their school and the communities they will serve in the future using the coaching and leadership skills they have learned.

“Our sports leaders programme is very successful and is now being used in the community.”
