Clitheroe Lions Club hosts Charity Golf Day

A total of 4,000 was raised for local charities as 34 Teams supported the ninth annual event.

Clitheroe member Mike Ainsworth led the winning team home. The Optimists shared first prize of 400.

Another Clitheroe hacker Steve Ackers put together a team of low handicap men from Lanway and they took the third prize of 200.

J.D.Construction, The Wanderers from Bolton took second and the pride of Great Harwood,Steve Pillings Welders won a round of golf for four at the Marriott, Worsley Park.

Twenty, twos were rewarded, as were Barnoldswicks Windle and Baker team for being nearest the pin on the 17th, and Ian Lewis hit the straightest Drive on the 13th.

Chris Hamer's birdie four on the 18th hole sealed victory for him and playing partner Peter Dunn in Clitheroe's Fourball Betterball on Saturday. Dunn came good on the back nine after Hamer had done all the spadework on the way out.

Paul Connolly and A. Hall combined well to score 43 points for runners-up spot.

David Knowles and Keith Allen were third.

Butcher, Alan Hacking beefed up the David Coupe, Nick Tomlinson team in Sunday's 3 ball Scramble, and they minced into first place.

One eagle and five birdies and still the John Willis, Steve and Daniel Turner team finished 0.4 short of the winning total.

The Juniors Midweek Stableford found Andy Hutchings in fine form. 40 points saw him win by one from Jack Mercer.

Clitheroe Golf Club's A team topped the Blackburn Town League for 2010 . Accrington were fourpoints away in second place, ahead of Wilpshire in third.

The Seniors' Section contestants for the prestigious Denis Kershaw Putter are at the semi-final stage and Dave Warner, Keith Allen and David Brennan await the winner of the remaining game between Norman Entwistle and Jack Simmons.

l Saturday saw the members of Whalley Golf Club compete for the Veterans' Bowl and monthly medal. Evergreen Paul Wray took the Veterans' Bowl with a knock of 80-8-72.

The divisional medal winners were, in Division One, Tom Tuley (71-2-69) ahead of Rob Andrew (73-2-71), Division Two, Andy Passmore (85-13-72) from Keith Fitzhenry (86-14-72), Division Three Matt Appleyard (92-20-72) from Colin Ashworth (95-22-73). The Best Gross prize went to Danny Liles with a 74.

There were five twos recorded by John Kitchen, Paul Wray (chipped in), Tom Tuley, J Hyde, and Dave Westwood.

The annual Stonyhurst 9 hole Foxes and Rabbits competition, in memory of Martin Young, was won by husband and wife Kath and Tony "Green Fingers" Lee.

The adult prize for the best rabbit (fewest putts) was won by Nina Blockeel with just 17, and the top junior rabbit was Matt Carrington.

The Ladies at Whalley held their August Open on Thursday, kindly sponsored again by Maureen Cookson. The winning team were Kath James (Whalley), J. Musker and C. Gambol (Stoneyhurst).

In second place were Linda Collinson, Linda Cain and Lisa Walling, all from Longridge. In third place after a card play-off were Joyce Andrew, Jane Smedley (Whalley) and Bev Dodds (Rossendale).

l It's been a busy weekend at Stonyhurst Park Golf Club, with both the ladies and men competing for their respective Shireburn Trophy. Nearest the Line for the ladies was Ann Hudson, with Julia Musker getting Nearest the Pin. Margaret Duckett took third spot with 32 points, runner-up on 33 points was Joyce Kenyon, but the overall winner with 34 points was Julia Musker.

For the men, Nearest the Line went to John Kirk, and Nearest the Pin was Geoff Pallister. Captain Tony Wright was third on a card play-off with 35 points, the runner-up, also with 35 points was Malcolm Kenyon, but out in front with 38 points was Miles Slinger.

l A busy week at Mytton Fold Golf Club started with the second round of the Kevin Shanley Trophy, a Senior's charity event supporting Derian House Children's Hospice. Tony Wilson whispered his way round the course to shoot a cultured 83-11-71, with the ever-improving Doug White (99-26-73) just two shots in arrears. Ray Standring, playing off 7, was third with a nett 74.

In a best of two from three scores to count, and with just one round to go, Wilson leads the field with nett 72 and 72, seven shots clear of Bernard Downs and a further shot clear of Garry Davies. It's all to play for when the series closes with the third, and final, round on September 9th.

Saturday saw the August' Monthly Medal, with John Parkinson (81-13-68) third, 4 under nett par. Runner-up was Chris Chadwick, who also recorded the best gross with a superb 71-5-66. This isthe ninth time this season Chrishas carded a score less than competition standard scratch, and he is the clear leader in the Order of Merit.

Phil Clegg took first prize with an outstanding 76-12-64.

In the twos competition, four competitors shared the spoils.

Barry Hargreaves birdied the first, while Captain Frank Hindle and John Parkinson took theirs on the ninth.

Winner Phil Clegg waited until the final hole before dipping his hand into the twos pot.

The Seniors were at it again on Tuesday with, appropriately, the Tuesday Trophy. In blustery conditions, it was a second win in a week for that man Tony Wilson,, carding a very respectable 26 stableford points over 11 holes. Runner-up was Ray Standring,, who went one place better than his Kevin Shanley Trophy result with 24 points. John Hammond took the final podium slot, just one point behind in third.
