Burnley schools qualify for SPAR Games

Wellfield Methodist and Anglican Church School clinched the top spot in quad kids athletics and Blessed Trinity will also represent team Burnley in girls’ rounders.

Both teams will now represent the district in the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals where they will compete against teams from 14 other Lancashire districts in a bid to be crowned county champions.

In a series of round robin events, 216 children from 27 schools took part in the Burnley quad kids competition which saw pupils from Wellfield Methodist Anglican Church School jump to glory when they finished in first place at the event hosted by Burnley Athletics Club.

Sir John Thursby Community College came in close at second place followed by St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School in third place.

Meanwhile, pupils from across Burnley swung into action at the girls’ rounders competition. Trinity RC College took the top spot in a challenging tournament against four other schools. Following Blessed Trinity was Sir John Thursby Community College in second place, Shuttleworth College in third, Burnley High School in fourth and Unity College in fifth.

Helen Tyson, school games organiser for Burnley who organised the events said: “Congratulations to both schools for reaching such a professional standard at each of the events. Thank you to Burnley Athletics Club which supported the quad kids event – without this support the level two events would not be possible.

“The girls’ rounders and quad kids competitions are the last of the Burnley level two events and it has been an exciting year. A total of eight schools from across the district will be attending the county finals on July 3 to represent team Burnley.

“The SPAR Lancashire School Games is all about getting youngsters involved in competitive, inclusive, team sports and I’m proud to say, that’s exactly what we have achieved – each year the games get bigger and this year was no exception as we have had more children involved than ever before.”

Organised by Active Lancashire, the SPAR Lancashire School Games comprises a series of inclusive sporting events that provides competitive and participative opportunities for all school children across the county. Children across Lancashire will continue to battle it out in a range of sports to gain a place at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals which will be held at Blackpool’s Stanley Park on July 3rd.
