Burnley Bobcats swim their way to promotion

Burnley Bobcats swim squad competed in the Division 1 final of The National Arena Swimming League (North West) at Broughton pool, Salford.

Sunday, 29th December 2013, 7:39 am

Their opponents were Carnforth, Chorley Marlins, City of Stoke on Trent, Horwich and Ulverston, swimming for their chance of promotion to the Premier Division.

It was a truly exciting evening, and over the 50 events, 16 relays and 34 individual events, Bobcats achieved 14 firsts, five second place and 10 third place positions to culminate in a total point score of 189, placed in third place behind Carnforth on 201, and Ulverston on 213 points - but enough to secure promotion to the top flight of the Premier League in 2014.

Bobcats were also awarded with the President’s Trophy for the Best Supported Club on the night, a well-deserved award to the team members’, parents and friends who came along to support the squad, who all put on an excellent performance cheering the team along.

The Bobcats Arena League squad for this season was: Girls - Anna Brown, Lily Duckworth, Zoe Sharpley, Kerry Gibbins, Mia Sheridan, Lucy Alexander, Saffron Fenton, Ellie Taylor, Madison Beswick, Katie Rennolds, Erica Minozzi, Ella Sheridan, Charlotte Waddington, Lucy Cole and Kerry Holding.

Boys – Jack Chapman, Adam Millington, Alex Minozzi, Tobias Pilkington, Robert Bryce, Thomas Mackay, Elliot Norman, Harry Pilkington, Dean Moorhouse, William Beaven, Jamie Sharpley, Luke Pickles, Ben Edwards, Ben Nutter, William Murray and Mike Robinson.

Head coach Mike Robinson said: “A fantastic performance this season in the Arena League and promotion to the Premier League is well deserved. The extra award of Best Supported Club proves how well the squad are encouraged and supported.”

After three seasons in the Minor League, Bobcats applied in 2011 to compete in Division Two, and following this they have gone from strength to strength, winning promotion to Division One and now to the Premier League, to compete against some of 15 top clubs in the North West in 2014.
